Photoline: The New Zealand Railway Photo Archive was born from a simple discussion — how could historic New Zealand railway photographs be made accessible to everyone, rather than remaining scattered across private collections, mailing lists, social media pages, and closed groups?
New Zealand’s railway history has been extensively photographed for well over a century, but much of that material remains difficult to find, poorly catalogued, or inaccessible to the wider public. The Photoline Archive aims to help preserve and share this visual history by providing a dedicated, searchable online archive for railway enthusiasts, historians, modellers, researchers, and anyone with an interest in New Zealand railways.
The site has been created and is maintained by a small group of dedicated volunteers with backgrounds in railway preservation, photography, archiving, and web development. By combining our knowledge, time, and technical expertise, we hope to ensure these photographs are preserved and remain available for future generations to enjoy.
Whether you are researching a locomotive, revisiting a favourite branch- or main-line, identifying locations, or simply browsing through New Zealand's railway past, we hope you find Photoline both useful and enjoyable.
If you value what we are doing and would like to support the ongoing hosting, storage, and development of the archive, you can help either by making a
donation or by contributing your own photographs and collections to the Photoline Archive for others to enjoy and preserve for future generations.
